NASA's Perseverance Rover Captures a Unique Earth Self-Portrait
In a remarkable feat of astronomy, NASA's Perseverance Mars rover has captured a one-of-a-kind image sequence, offering a unique perspective on our planet from the surface of another world. On July 2, during the 1,907th Martian day of its mission, the rover's Mastcam-Z instrument witnessed Earth and the Martian moon Phobos in a celestial dance.
This event, known as an occultation, is a rare occurrence where a larger body completely blocks the view of a smaller one from the observer's standpoint. In this case, Earth, a mere pixel-size dot from Mars, disappeared behind the crescent of Phobos, the larger of Mars' two moons. This is the first time humanity has witnessed such an occurrence from the surface of another planet.
The image sequence, taken at approximately 7 p.m. local solar time, showcases Earth traveling from the upper left to the lower right of the frame, while Phobos moves from the lower left to the upper right, sweeping across Earth's path. In the third frame, the two celestial bodies meet, and Earth vanishes behind Phobos' shadowed edge, creating a captivating 'Earth self-portrait'.
The significance of this observation lies not only in its uniqueness but also in the contrasting nature of the celestial bodies involved. Phobos, a potato-shaped moon about 17 miles across, orbits Mars at a distance of 4,850 miles, appearing roughly one-third the width of Earth's Moon as seen from Earth.
