January 10, 2010– 20th Anniversary

Dear friends in Christ,

On June 13, thanks to your encouragement and support, we are sending eight people from our congregation and three from New Promise Lutheran Church in St. George, Utah, on an adventure, working with Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Builds. Our congregations are praying and partnering to serve those in need, not only locally, but also in Texas. I’ll be going along, probably just as a glorified coach and cheerleader, but my plan is to a helpful member of the team.

In Galveston we will join the Hurricane Ike recovery effort. Many congregations throughout the country have sent teams of workers to the Gulf Coast area, but few have gone to Galveston, and the destruction there was intense. God’s love can work miracles in the lives of people, and we are praying to be faithful to the tasks God gives us, not only in rebuilding homes, but also people. For this kind of work, God has promised to bless us with the Holy Spirit.

Faithfulness is what God calls us to, as individuals and as a congregation. Why would God want us to travel all the way to Galveston? When the Apostle Paul asked the people in Corinth to look past the needs of their own city to their brothers and sisters in Israel who were undergoing great hardship during a drought, Paul invited them to participate in a family much larger than themselves (2 Corinthians 8). It is easier and simpler to focus only on those who are near. But God calls us to stretch our thinking and loving beyond what is simple to what is incredible—to mirror the expansive love God has for the whole world. This is the kind of love for which we are ambassadors. Not only do we send these workers as ambassadors of Christ’s love, but we plan to hear God speaking to us through this journey. What will God teach our congregation through this mission?

There are over 1500 miles of roads and highways between Las Vegas and Galveston, and these brave souls were planning to make the journey by car caravan. When we found out that we could fly there for about $200 each, it became an easy decision to fly 3 hours and 10 minutes rather than drive 22 hours and 25 minutes each way. Please thank and uphold in prayer Amy Potts, director of service, as she and her partners work hard to complete the preparations. Pray for and encourage all eight members of the team from The Lakes and the three members from New Promise.
